Presentation Workflow (p. 11) as applied to this video project
1. Determine audience and scope of project
· (for this video assignment, the WebTech Challenge kind of did that for us)
2. Brainstorm, Develop Theme, and Structure
3. Write
· Develop theme, scripts, and stories
4. Critique
· Align the writing with the audience, identify gaps between audience needs and writing
5. Visualize
· Storyboard (see file embedded below)
· Make word maps
· Turn words to pictures
· Develop diagrams
· Cull data
6. Graphic Design
· Arrange type and font
· Determine colors
· Determine background
· Select images
· Make a template
7. Animation Design
· Determine purpose
· Determine speed
· Determine direction
· Design fluidity

Jerry, I think this outline is great. It seems to break down the task very clearly. I am a bit concerned that Steve will have to do too much since he'll be doing a lot of the storyboarding up front (step 5), and then doing step 6 and 7. Steve-- how can we help?

(Steve - 11/9/2010): I took the storyboard Jerry hashed out and tweaked it slightly to make a script I think we can do a lot with. I'm going to make a demo version of the video so we know what we want/don't want tomorrow night. The key to making this work is going to be really cheesing it up in the 1950s style - I think we'll be able to do that pretty easily with what we've got so far.

Intro to Ed Tech Group Video Script
Narrator: It is becoming increasing evident that developing a strong web presence is the best way to succeed in our rapidly changing educational community. Soon, this type of technology will be essential to finding the best jobs. The question is: do you have what it takes to be a 21st century, web-literate educator?
Narr: Let's take a look at a scenario in which having a positive web presence made an impact on one kind-hearted, all-American citizen.
Narr: Meet Principal Smith and her staff.
Narr: …It looks as though there are many applicants, but very few positions.
Narr. Here’s Mr. Goofus…Mr. Goofus has brought a thick portfolio with recommendation letters, example lessons, and other information. That seems like it’ll do the trick.
Narr: Unfortunately for Mr. Goofus, creating that portfolio was both a tedious and ineffective process – I sure wouldn't want to have to read that!
Narr: Here is Ms. Gallant…Ms. Gallant has brought a thin folder containing her application form and is able to direct the hiring staff to her online web presence for more information.
Narr: Well look at that – she’s also contacted the staff and used LinkedIn International to inform them of her skills and qualifications!
Narr: Uh-oh! It looks like Principal Smith has caught Mr. Goofus off-guard by asking for data and assessments.
Narr: Ms. Gallant, on the other hand, is able to show video from a lesson, student feedback and comments, and assessment data from her website!
Narr: Principal Smith asks both Mr. Goofus and Ms. Gallant about a time they struggled and how they overcame those challenges.
Narr: Mr. Goofus is telling a long, tedious story with no evidence of growth.
Narr: Ms. Gallant is able to pull up a video of the lesson online, complete with solicited feedback from other educators.
Narr: Ms. Gallant describes how she was able to use this feedback to make the lesson more student-centered…And how it worked! Good for you, Ms. Gallant!
Narr: As the interviewers leave, Principal Smith and her staff have a tough decision to make.
Narr: Though Principal Smith is not excited to thumb through Mr. Goofus’s 100-page binder, she finds herself very interested in Ms. Gallant’s online portfolio.
Narr: Ms. Gallant appears to have posted a video that explained her teaching philosophy. It is obvious to Principal Smith that Ms. Gallant empowers her students, uses emerging technologies to teach, and is highly committed to learning.
Narr: Well, well, well! It looks like Ms. Gallant had a new update for her LinkedIn page!
Narr: It seems that Mr. Goofus needs to spend some more time creating an online web presence to replace his old portfolio…
Narr: Luckily, he appears to have enrolled in an educational technology course at the University of Connecticut to craft an online web presence that really shines!
Narr: Wow! Look at those e-portfolios! Mr. Goofus really seems to be setting the bar high now! Next time that job opens up, he’ll be a shoe-in!
Narr: Remember, if you want to blast off into a new career with the ease of Ms. Gallant, you’ll be doing yourself and your country a great service to show your support of e-portfolios! Don’t allow yourself to be trapped in the past: make yourself an educator of tomorrow…today!

Brainstorming: Can we commit to generating brainstorming ideas and getting them up here by Friday night? Then we can vote on the best ones (maybe we can just edit the Wikipage and put an asterisk * next to the our favorites - the ones with the most * win) and determine if we're going to roll with one as a class or decide to break off into 2 or 3 groups if we have more than one getting support.

Sounds like a plan!

a) Focus on Social Networking:**

  • Propaganda Poster/Commercial
  • "Goofus & Gallant"
  • Grainy Film Effects
  • Historical Events (Nuclear Bomb/Moon Walk/etc.) -->
  • Focus on Narrator --> Less Acting
  • 1950s-Style Videos
  • Animated slides, moving pictures, and Flash
  • "Don't get caught unprepared" message--be ready for anything (including having a professional web presence)

Some examples of avatars... so, let me know..

b) Music video with popular music

  • If we find a 3 minute pop song that has some kind of duet or content message that touches on technology, or best practices vs. not so good practices

c) Music video where we rewrite the music to apply to using social networking and creating a web presence

  • Or we could find a catchy pop song and rewrite the lyrics (especially if anyone in our class can sing)

d) Social Networking over time

  • Use slides, Flash, and pictures to show how teachers have used tech over time, and how they've had to struggle to attain the same goals that technology can now facilitate

e) Simple i movie with a lot of black screens with simple text and pictures and music throughout; similar to segment "When I become a teacher"
  • cool camera angles
  • interview segments; very short
  • "When I become a teacher..."
    • I want to post crazy partying pictures on my facebook for the whole world to see
    • I want to reject the use of technology because I am scared at what might happen
    • I want to bring my students to the computer lab to type their papers (only after they have written out their 5 paragraph essay by hand, first)
    • I don`t allow to my students use computers because it is a way to cheat.
    • I want to allow the use internet because everything there is so acurate and updated.
    • I want to be very innovative by allowing to my students look for definitions in internet.
    • I will promote always go to the library. The books are the best and most reliable resource these days.
    • I will continue updated in relation with technology.. I am so good with Word and Power Point!!
    • and so on.... could be pretty simple, but pretty profound like I found that one to be
